I planned on skipping Saturday’s style session after my dog passed. But I’m pretty proud of myself for keeping up with my daily hat routine… not to mention actually getting dressed and remembering to document each outfit. So here I am, a day later (or two, depending when you open this), sharing all 7 of my outfits with a hat.

A little backstory on why so many hats: I chatted about this before in a real talk about cosmetic dermatology. But since I’m still shocked by how many of my friends (all mid-30s to 40s) have never had an annual skin check, please consider this a little PSA to schedule one if you haven’t. They’re usually covered by insurance, and if you have anything cancerous they can detect it early and often just laser it off.

I’m lucky I haven’t had any cancerous moles, but I’ve had quite a few pre-cancerous ones. They’re called actinic keratosis aka a patch or bump you get from too much sun exposure (thanks to growing up in the ’90s in Miami and thinking tanning oil counted as SPF). Needless to say, I now know better.

But the damage is there, which is why I started wearing hats more. It’s also why I made it a must to wear a hat every day last week, after I had to get yet another bump frozen off. Here are the 7 hats I wore… and the outfits I paired with them for real mom life.

The hat: Eric Javits Suncrest

Why I love it: It’s a fedora-visor hybrid. You can lay back on a lounge chair wearing it, or in mom life, stick your bun through the hole in the back so it doesn’t fly off while chasing toddlers.

The outfit: One of my beach go-tos is a linen button-down and pull-on linen shorts. Sometimes I match them, sometimes I mix neutrals. I love that you can wear the shorts with the bikini top when it’s hot and use the shirt as a coverup when it cools down or you’ve had too much sun.

The hat: Hat Attack

Why I love it: The straw is super lightweight, doesn’t crease, and has an adjustable string inside so it fits perfectly.

The outfit: All black felt right for a dog happy hour in Chubbs’ memory. To make it feel summery, I went with all light neutral accessories.

The hat: Anthropologie Nautical Cap (similar)

Why I love it: The color and the cute Sardines motif.

The outfit: This was my first time wearing these bike shorts to work out. The leggings and flare pants from the same line are my favorites, and I ended up liking the shorts version just as much. They suck you in while still being comfy and don’t ride up. I usually tie a button-down or long sleeve shirt around my waist after class. It makes me feel less naked in the wild and, bonus, it cinches the waist!

The hat: Eric Javits Suncrest

Why I love it: Same hat as above, same reason. This is the first color I bought.

The outfit: This is actually an outfit repeat from the week prior. I loved it so much I figured why not wear it again? The water-resistant shorts are majorly helpful when my son splashes. And stripes always make me feel a little more put together at the beach.

Our styling sessions go deeper after the paywall. Here’s what’s below this week:

  • 3 more outfit ideas with hats

  • how I wash my baseball caps while keeping their shape

  • an easy hack for keeping makeup off the inside of your caps
